Discover These Crucial Pencil Techniques

By: R. Schmidt

There are diverse ways of holding a pencil for drawing. There is not one perfect way, but several options, depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

The Diverse Ways to Hold a Pencil for Drawing

* Grip your pencil like a writing tool, close to the tip, when sketching outlines or adding details to your drawing. This allows maximum control of the pencil.

* To draw long, steady or flowing lines, hold the pencil near the middle with the end steadied in your palm. This allows stable positioning and control to create long, even lines.

* While shading bigger areas, take full advantage of holding the pencil midway, slanted sideways so it is nearly parallel to the paper. This makes available the side of the graphite to draw even strokes.

* For areas needing darker shades, grab the pencil close to the tip (the pencil is under your hand) and push the side of the head to the paper. This results tones of deeper, darker colors for tiny areas of dark shading.

The Ideal Amount of Pressure for Drawing with Pencils

The magnitude of pressure required when drawing with pencils varies depending on the desired effect and the hardness of the pencil. For laying out the preliminary sketch, use a hard pencil with light pressure.

Softer pencils leave darker lines, so depending on how dark you desire the area to be; you will have to regulate pressure. For instance, a 9B pencil with a bulky hand will result a very dark line and with a lighter hand it will even now be dark but less than before.

There is no general rule for the amount of pressure to use. Test with different pencils and pressures to achieve the effects you want.

You should keep one thing in mind: for drawing darker lines forever prefer using a softer pencil over providing more pressure. The rationale: too much pressure may damage the paper.
