The text of an online classified ad is the most important part of the ad. This may seem too obvious to even require reiteration. However, since an online classified ad is different from a print classified ad, it should be clarified. An online ad allows for more space—hence the possibility of experimentation. The number of pictures you can include in your ad is limitless. And since there are several free classified ads sites on the Internet, one can simply post as many ads as possible in order to achieve the desired effect. However, this is not necessarily true. You can attain maximum results just by posting your ads on a single free classifieds website. But this can only be possible if you create your ad properly, adhering to the basic manners employed in basic advertisements. When writing a classified ad, make sure that you have the average audience in mind. This, of course, doesn’t always apply, especially since some ads require a more specialized approach. But when this isn’t the case, the best way to get good results to target a wide range of people as possible. This doesn’t mean to say that you can forget what you know about niche marketing or targeting the right audience. However, even within that right audience, you can still alienate if you do not know how to write your ad. The best way to do this is to write using a clear yet simple language. If your product is a gadget or technology related, make sure you include descriptions the normal person can grasp—without disregarding those who know better. For example, a casual buyer, when looking for a laptop, will probably not consider the product’s specs so much. Therefore, it is imperative that you include layman’s descriptions of the product (such as the price and how it compares to the prices of other sellers and the additional bonuses you can give, if applicable). Still, do not forget to mention the specs—not everyone is a clueless buyer, after all. Always—always!—write your ads in short sentences. However, avoid sounding too clipped on your ads. Alternate your short sentences with longer (but not extremely long) sentences. This way, the ad will sound more natural. As a general rule: a sentence with more than 15 words is already considered long. Of course, simple words are better than highfalutin ones. The key goal of any form of writing is to present all the important information clearly as early as possible. The same rule can be applied when writing a classified ad. Make sure all relevant informant is written at the first few paragraphs of the ad in order to attract interest. And when this isn’t possible (for instance, you can’t put your contact numbers at the topmost part of the ad), make sure important details can be seen easily. Do not make the reader search for these important information—because they wouldn’t. In the end, all classified ads should be easy to understand and important information should be highlighted prominently.
